Legendary Cannabis Strain Terpene Profiles

ACDC

The classic cannabis strain ACDC (aka The CBD Queen) is an original high-CBD, low THC content strain and a Cannabis Cup winner for it’s non-intoxicating and highly therapeutic effects.

Exceptionally high in CBD, with a 20:1 CBD-to-THC ratio, according to testing from SC Labs. Resin Seeds describes the plant’s aroma as a mix of cherry, diesel, gas, and Mandarin peel. Dominant terpenes in ACDC are Myrcene, Alpha and Beta Pinene.

Myrcene

Myrcene, specifically β-myrcene, is a monoterpene and the most common terpene produced by cannabis (some varieties contain up to 60% of the essential oil). Its aroma has been described as musky, earthy, herbal – akin to cloves. A high myrcene level in cannabis (usually above 0.5%) results in the well-known “couch-lock” effect of classic Indica medicinal cannais strains.

Myrcene is found in oil of hops, citrus fruits, bay leaves, eucalyptus, wild thyme, lemon grass and many other plants. Myrcene has some very special medicinal properties, including lowering the resistance across the blood to brain barrier, allowing itself and many other chemicals to cross the barrier easier and more quickly.

Alpha and Beta Pinene

Akin to its name, pinene has distinctive aromas of pine and fir. Pinene is one of the principal monoterpenes that is important physiologically in both plants and animals. It tends to react with other chemicals, forming a variety of other terpenes (like limonene) and other compounds.

Pinene is used in medicine as an anti-inflammatory, expectorant, bronchodilator and local antiseptic. Clinical studies indicate that the effects of THC may be lessened if mixed with pinene.

AFGHAN KUSH

The classic cannabis strain Afghan Kush was a wild lady for hundreds of years, flourishing in the harsh natural climates of its homeland and refining itself through many generations of evolution. The aroma recalls mango and tropical oranges mixed with an earthy funk. Pine, herbal fragrances fill your garden (or house) with the scent of Afghan Kush.

The taste isn’t nearly as strong as some other strains. Users describe it as mild, even bland, with a whisper of fruit on the exhale. Revered for its heavy resin content and powerfully sedating effects, Afghan Kush is a top choice for anyone looking to relax after a long day. Myrcene, Alpha Pinene and Limonene are dominate terpenes in Afghan Kush.

Limonene

Limonene is a monoterpenoid and one of two major compounds formed from pinene. As the name suggests, varieties high in limonene have strong citrusy smells like oranges, lemons and limes. Strains high in limonene promote a general uplift in mood and attitude. This citrusy terpene is the major constituent in citrus fruit rinds, rosemary, juniper and peppermint, as well as in several pine needle oils.

Limonene is highly absorbed by inhalation and quickly appears in the bloodstream. Clinical studies have shown that it assists in the absorption of other terpenes through the skin and other body tissue.

ATF

ATF (aka Alaskan Thunder F*ck) was originally cultivated in Matanuska Valley, Alaska. Sources are conflicted about the genetic origin of this strain, but most seem to agree it began as a cross between Russian Ruderalls and an unknown type of Northern California Sativa, later to be crossed again with Afghani Landrace in the 1970s.

ATF is a rare earthy, pungent, sativa-dominant hybrid .Widely known as one of the best cannabis strains around, ATF delivers a soaring, euphoric, cerebral high that electrifies the senses, relaxes the body, and lifts the spirits. ATF is notably pungent and sweet on the palate, but it also has notes of citrus, banana, and spice with grape undertones that make for a deliciously unique taste experience. Dominate terpenes in ATF are Linalool, Alpha Pinene and Myrcene in order of dominance.

Linalool

Linalool is a monoterpenoid and has been described as having floral and lavender undertones. Varieties high in linalool promote calming, relaxing effects. Linalool has been used for centuries as a sleep aid. Linalool lessens the anxious emotions provoked by pure THC, thus making it helpful in the treatment of both psychosis and anxiety. Studies also suggest that linalool boosts the immune system; can significantly reduce lung inflammation; and can restore cognitive and emotional function (making it useful in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease).

BLUE DREAM

The classic cannabis strain Blue Dream is famously euphoric and creative. It is a sativa-dominant hybrid marijuana strain made by crossing Blueberry with Haze. This strain produces a balanced high, along with effects such as cerebral stimulation and full-body relaxation.

Blue Dream originated in California and has since achieved legendary status among West Coast strains and has quickly become one of the most-searched-for strains in the United States. In terms of flavor, Blue Dream is reported to smell and taste like sweet berries. Dominate terpenes in Blue Dream are Myrcene, Alpha Pinene and Beta-Caryophyllene in order of dominance.

Beta-Caryophyllene

Beta-caryophyllene is a sesquiterpene found in many plants such as Thai basils, cloves, cinnamon leaves, black pepper, hops, cloves, oregano, and in minor quantities in lavender. It’s aroma has been described as peppery, woody and/or spicy. Caryophyllene is the only terpene known to interact with the endocannabinoid system (CB2).

Studies show β–caryophyllene holds promise in cancer treatment plans. Research shows shows that β–caryophyllene selectively binds to the CB2 receptor and that it is a functional CB2 agonist. Further, β–caryophyllene was identified as a functional non-psychoactive CB2 receptor ligand in foodstuff and as a macrocyclic anti-inflammatory cannabinoid in cannabis. A 2014 clinical study showed potential for beta-caryophyllene as a treatment for chronic pain, and it has also been shown to have anti-anxiety and antidepressant effects.

CLEMENTINE

The classic cannabis strain Clementine is a energizing sativa-dominant strain that is made by crossing Tangie with Lemon Skunk. This strain is loved for its sweet taste and citrus aroma. If you are prone to groggy mornings, the Clementine strain is great for putting a pep in your step. It’s energizing and refreshing and may help you to feel focused and awake. It is also super tangy, zingy, and tastes like clementines, hence the name.

At the 2015 Cannabis Cup held in Michigan, a concentrated live resin of Clementine was awarded second place in the Best Sativa category. Clementine’s cerebral effects come on strong and fast and induce a state of heightened alertness and focus. This strain also provides a short-term energy boost, which is why it is a popular choice among cannabis users who like to “wake-and-bake”. Naturally, given its effects, the Clementine strain is only suitable for morning or afternoon use. Dominate terpenes in Clementine are Terpinoline, Ocimene and Beta-Caryophyllene in order of dominance.

Terpinoline

α-Terpineol, terpinen-4-ol, and 4-terpineol are three closely related monoterpenoids. The aroma of terpineol has been compared to lilacs and flower blossoms. Terpineol is often found in cannabis varieties that have high pinene levels, which unfortunately mask the fragrant aromas of terpineol. Terpineol, specifically α-terpineol, is known to have calming, relaxing effects. It also exhibits antibiotic, AChe inhibitor and antioxidant antimalarial properties.

Ocimene

Ocimene, a monoterpene also identified as Beta-Ocimene, is derived from the Greek word “Ocimum,” which means basil. This terpene offers many medicinal and therapeutic uses for its uplifting effects, anti-convulsant, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and anti-fungal properties.

Although its profile is not predominantly herbal, Ocimene displays a woody aroma and can be described as fruity or citrusy in terms of flavors. As mentioned earlier, Ocimene can be found in mint, parsley, basil, tarragon, kumquats, mango fruits, lavender, orchid flowers, Hops, and bergamot.

Ocimene is used in different everyday products such as perfumes, fabric softeners, antiperspirants, shampoos, soap, and hard-surface cleaners. Besides, its scent is not appealing to insects, making it ideal in insecticides.

DURBAN POISON

Durban poison is an award-winning Sativa strain that’s highly prized for its unique citrus flavor with a bit of spicy hashish.

Durban Poison is the perfect strain to help you stay productive through a busy day, when exploring the outdoors, or to lend a spark of creativity. Dominate terpenes in Durban Poison are Terpinolene, Humulene and Beta-Caryophyllene in order of dominance.

Humulene

Humulene is a sesquiterpene also known as α-humulene and α–caryophyllene; an isomer of β–caryophyllene. Humulene is found in hops, cannabis sativa strains, and Vietnamese coriander, among other naturally occurring substances. Humulene is what gives beer its distinct ‘hoppy’ aroma.

Humulene is considered to be anti-tumor, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anorectic (suppresses appetite). It has commonly been blended with β–caryophyllene and used as a major remedy for inflammation. Humulene has been used for generations in Chinese medicine. It aids in weight loss by acting as an appetite suppressant.
