Krill oil is a superior source of omega-3 fatty acids, offering enhanced absorption due to its phospholipid structure. It also contains astaxanthin, adding antioxidant benefits. Studies show krill oil supports heart health, reduces joint discomfort, and promotes brain function. (Source: Lipids in Health and Disease, 2010)

There are many potential health benefits associated with Krill oil, including its high omega-3 fatty acid content.
Fish oil is increasingly being replaced with krill oil as a supplement. The food is made from krill, a small crustacean that whales, penguins, and other sea creatures consume. As with fish oil, it contains docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), types of omega-3 fats found only in marine sources. Various health benefits are associated with them, as they perform important functions in the body. As a result, if you don’t eat eight ounces of seafood per week, it may be a good idea to take a supplement that contains EPA and DHA.
Krill Oil is a Fantastic Source of Healthy Fats
Krill oil and fish oil both contain omega-3 fats EPA and DHA. Some evidence suggests, however, that krill oil may provide easier absorption of omega-3 fats than fish oil, because triglycerides are the primary form of omega-3 fats in fish oil. There have been some studies showing that krill oil is more effective at raising omega-3 levels than fish oil, possibly because they contain different omega-3 fats. According to another study, both krill oil and fish oil had the same amount of EPA and DHA and were equally effective at raising blood omega-3 levels.
Krill Oil May Help Fight Inflammation*
It has been proven that omega-3 fatty acids found in krill oil are helpful in reducing inflammation in the body. The body appears to be able to absorb krill oil more easily than other marine omega-3 sources, making it even more effective at fighting inflammation. Moreover, krill oil contains an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory pigment called astaxanthin.
Inflammation has been the subject of a few studies investigating krill oil. In a study of 25 individuals with slightly elevated blood fat levels, 1,000-mg supplements of krill oil daily improved inflammatory markers more than 2,000-mg supplements of purified omega-3s. Additionally, a study of 90 people with chronic inflammation found that taking 300 mg of krill oil daily reduced a marker of inflammation by up to 30% after one month.
Krill Oil May Help Reduce Arthritis and Joint Pain*
Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, krill oil may also reduce arthritis symptoms and joint pain, which are often caused by inflammation. Krill oil was shown to reduce stiffness, functional impairment, and pain in patients with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis in a study that found it significantly reduced inflammation markers.
In a second small, well-designed study, krill oil significantly reduced knee pain while participants slept and stood for 30 days. Additionally, it increased their range of motion.
Krill Oil May Help Manage PMS Symptoms*
There is some evidence that omega-3 fats may help decrease pain and inflammation in general. Fish oil and omega-3 supplements have been shown in several studies to reduce PMS symptoms and period pain. This result has led to some women using less pain medication during their periods. Researchers compared krill oil and fish oil’s effects on PMS women. Researchers found that krill oil decreased pain medication use significantly more than fish oil did despite both supplements improving symptoms statistically significantly.
Krill Oil May Help Improve Blood Lipids and Heart Health*
DHA and EPA in particular are considered healthy fats for the heart. There is some evidence that fish oil and krill oil can both improve blood lipid levels. Several studies have shown that it is especially effective at lowering blood triglycerides and other fats in the body.
Researchers compared the effects of krill oil and purified omega-3 fatty acids on cholesterol and triglycerides in one study. High density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol was only raised by krill oil. Despite the much lower dosage, it was more effective at reducing an inflammation marker. Conversely, pure omega-3s lower triglycerides more effectively.
According to another study, krill oil significantly improved insulin resistance scores as well as blood vessel lining function when compared with olive oil.
