Adaptogens were initially defined as substances that enhance the “state of non-specific resistance” in stress, a physiological condition that is linked with various disorders of the neuroendocrine-immune system. Studies on animals and isolated neuronal cells have revealed that adaptogens exhibit neuroprotective, anti-fatigue, antidepressive, anxiolytic, nootropic and CNS stimulating activity.
There are three core qualities that plants must have to be adaptogenic:
- It is non-toxic when taken in normal doses.
- It helps your body cope with stress.
- It allows your body to return to balance (homeostasis).
In Ayurveda, amla is used to balance the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) of the body. It is also a rejuvenating agent (Rasayana) and has a cooling effect. Clinical studies suggest that Amla may improve kidney, liver, and heart health, enhance immune function and hair growth, and promote digestive health.*
Ashwagandha is also known as "winter cherry" and "Indican Ginseng". Alkaloids, mainly withanine and withanolides, make up the majority of ashwagandha root's bioactive compounds. It also contains saponins, choline, beta-sitosterol, chlorogenic acid, scopoletin, withaferin, sitoindosides, oligosaccharides, and polysaccharides. Besides being low in fat, it is rich in dietary fiber, iron, calcium, potassium, copper, zinc, and manganese.
Astragalus has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and is used to protect and support the immune system, preventing colds and upper respiratory infections, lowering blood pressure, treating diabetes, and protecting the liver.*
Among its many purported health benefits, cordyceps is most widely used for strengthening immune function*. It may be able to protect the body against free radicals because of its powerful antioxidant properties. In addition, cordyceps may support kidney and heart health, improve athletic endurance, and enhance libido.*
Due to its polysaccharides, nucleosides, and related components (especially cordycepin), Cordyceps is commonly used as a Polysaccharide-K (PSK) supplement. Additionally, it contains fatty acids, proteins, trace elements, and several sterols, such as ergosterol, which is a biological precursor to vitamin D2.
Cordyceps have a neuroprotective function, helping to prevent damage and protect the brain*. Cordyceps is beneficial for brain health as it reduces the impact of aging and can prevent cognitive decline associated with aging, such as dementia & Alzheimer's.
Goji berries exert various biological activities and health benefits, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, immuno-stimulating, anti-diabetic, neuroprotective, anti-cancer, prebiotic, and anti-obesogenic effects.*
Lion's Mane Mushrooms, also known as Mountain-Priest mushroom and Bearded Tooth fungus, is used in Traditional Chinese as a tonic for the five internal organs. Clinical research has found that lion's mane may help protect against dementia, reduce mild symptoms of anxiety and depression and help repair nerve damage.* It also has strong anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and immune-boosting abilities and been shown to lower the risk of heart disease, cancer, ulcers and diabetes in animals.*
The native Andeans used maca root as food and medicine, and Inca Empire warriors took maca root before battle to boost their energy, stamina, and general health. Maca is also known to help increase and improve fertility in both men and women and boost libido.*
The pharmacological effects of Panax ginseng have been demonstrated in cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and have been used for promoting immune function, central nervous system (CNS) function, relieving stress, and for its antioxidant activities. *
Reishi has been found to help improve the nerve growth and survival factors, which are important for maintaining brain health. Furthermore, Reishi mushrooms may reduce the risk of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's.*
